Administrative History

The first student newspaper at Delaware State University was The Echo. From 1909 to 1912, it was published weekly and cost two cents for the week or fifty cent for the year. During this time, articles featured advertisements, alumni news, editorials and society columns. In 1957, The Echo became the title of a magazine published by the Alumni Relations office for distribution among alumni. All copies of The Echo, from 1909 to current issues, may be found in the Office of Alumni Relations collection.

The State College Lantern was the second iteration of a student newspaper. Little is known about this paper due to the existence of only two editions dated 1929 and 1940. Both of these are included within this collection.

The Hornet is the most recent and ongoing student publication at Delaware State University. It was first established in 1950 with editions initially being printed once a month and later on a quarterly basis. The Hornet continued to be printed until April 2015 after which point the newspaper moved to a digital, online format. The Hornet has always been offered free of charge to the university community. The topics of The Hornet include articles related to current events at the university, editorial columns, poetry, cartoons, photography, topics of popular culture, and fashion advice.
